Monthly Mindset: Stretching

The passion for stretching yourself and sticking to it, even (or especially) when it’s not going well, is the hallmark of the growth mindset. This is the mindset that allows people to thrive during some of the most challenging times in their lives.
— Carol Dweck

We started off this year discussing the idea of courage and our willingness to show up. Over these past months I have read a handful of books that expand this idea through the concept of stretching.

A majority of us would probably visualize the idea of stretching as a physical action we do before or after a workout, but that’s not what I’m referring to.

I’m talking about stretching your capabilities —stretching your mind and learning new things.

Our largest surges of growth will come from stretching ourselves beyond our comfort zones. All this means is trying something new, or challenging, and growing from that experience.

As a coach, I see people stretch themselves everyday…trying things that they never thought they’d do or, stronger yet, that they never thought they'd be able to do again.

This concept of stretching does not only have to happen at the gym; cooking new recipes, learning new languages, taking different paths to and from work, meeting new people, are all ways to stretch our limits and take us away from our comfort zones. These processes may seem scary, or unattainable at first, but by stretching ourselves enough the capability is there.

…and the stretch to success is worth the reach.

We start off with the courage to try, but we have to extend this courage, stretch it out everyday, to be able to be the person we want to be.

Each and every one of us wants to reach the goals we set out for, be successful in our endeavors, and feel our lives have a purpose. Our comfort zones will always be there, it’s up to us to step outside of them to stretch, and see how far we can really go.

The more we stretch the more our comfort zones expand, and this expansion provides more capacity to accomplish amazing things.
