Weight Loss Wednesday: The 3 P's


Who here has taken a basic economics class? Well if you did, you probably came across something called the 4 Ps of marketing. Basically, the 4 Ps were four product variables (all beginning with P), that when manipulated were supposed to determine how successful the product would be when sold. Well, nutrition isn’t marketing, but just like marketing, it has a set of variables that determine how successful you will be at it as well as how effective you will be in advancing towards your goals. Let’s break it down:


Prioritization:  The first variable in nutrition has to do with mindset and can be referred to as ‘prioritization’. Proper nutrition must be a priority. If you do not prioritize it, nutrition is easy to neglect whenever we are stressed, rushed, sad, need a pick me up or any number of similar situations that can be qualified with an excuse. Put nutrition first and you will not only feel better, but will likely have more energy for life’s little hurdles as well.


Planning:  The second variable is perhaps the most important one- planning. In order to succeed in the long run, you have to plan, not just for the average day, but also for those situations where things don’t got according to plan. Preparing and storing extra portions of healthy meals are a great way to do this, as well as having healthy, shelf stable snacks at your desk, in your car and anywhere else you might be stuck.



Portioning:  Last, but not least, we have the third variable or P-portioning. Portion sizes are easily overlooked or fudged a little, but are still important. Extra calories (even healthy ones) still add up. It’s important to be mindful of how much you are eating and where those portions fit into your overall daily goals.


To maximize the potential for your success in your nutrition journey, remember the 3 Ps: Prioritize, Plan and Portion. If you plan for success, you will achieve it.
