The Monday Mindset: Action

By Jason Harrell

Ponder this: action isn’t just the effect of motivation; it’s also the cause of it.

That’s deep, right? When we want to accomplish something but find ourselves lacking the requisite motivation or inspiration, let’s not assume were screwed until some major life altering event comes along and inspires us to get off the couch and do something. Before we get to that point, just get up and do something.

In other words, just start. When we start to do something (action), we set in motion our own inspirations that lead to our very own motivations. Our actions create further emotional reactions and inspirations, which in turn move on to motivate our future actions.

Think of it like this: If you find yourself lacking the motivation to make an important change in your life, do something, and then harness the reaction to that action as a way to begin motivating yourself. And voila, you have self motivation. Your first action step could be as simple as waking up when the alarm goes off, prepping your food for week on Sundays, doing your mobility work first thing in the morning, journaling uninterrupted for 20 minutes a day…but by taking small, consistent action steps we find our inspiration, and our daily motivation.

This is often all that’s necessary to get the snowball rolling, the action/the first step, needed to inspire the motivation to keep going. You can become your own sourse of inspiration. You can become your own sourse of motivation. We all start in the same place, the beginning, and learn from there. Action is always within reach. And with simply taking that first step, by doing something as your only metric for success - - well, then even failure pushes you forward.

Strength is a journey. Enjoy the ride.
